Although I haven't been able to cleanly put the thoughts together yet, I feel strongly that much of these problems are directly related to the drive towards industrialized society and the mass education system tasked with increasing consumption and replaceable workers.

I think this also ties in the forgotten American heritage of protesting against rampant consumerism. Which in turn ties into the newly planted environmental groups which are protesting the same consumption but from a practical instead of philosophical vector...
