Life anywhere has its little frustrations. Normally we just get over it and move on. Sometimes the frustrations keep getting thrown back at you again and again. The best of us move on anyway. The rest of us occasionally find the intense need to dwell on it a bit.

"I haven't run into the "frozen with fear" response"
I was in Osaka this past summer and ran into this. Perhaps it was circumstances, I don't know. Anyhow I was walking along to the train when I hear BLAM CRASH, a woman had plowed into a pylon guarding cars from entering the park (which I'm not sure had room for a car anyhow.) I was just starting my second year and so my Japanese was abysmal at best. My Texas gentlemen obviously wouldn't let me just walk on my busy way which seemed like the typical response.
So I jog up and ask the typical "Daijoubu" followed by "nanika ga itai desu ka." I didn't get a "STAY AWAY EVIL SPIRIT" look nor a "oh how thoughtful" look as I offered to help her up. She really almost seemed to ignore me, sat for a bit, pick up the bike and proceed to walk off without a word.
The only thing I think I really truly learned in my short stay in Japan is that for everything I understand about Japan, there are two more things that completely bewilder me.
