Will, that's awesome work, and I think you're heading in the right direction with the vertical search (see my comment on HN).
I have the same problems trying to look up reference material for Django and its components.
Because of this, I've been working on a light-weight source code search-engine to quickly look up Django class & function definitions:

Try entering in something like "def render_to_response".
