Yes, I would say that every communication with the server will be in the form of a 'micro php script', although the scripts won't necessarily be simple or in PHP on the server side.
I suspect they don't explain it because they've been around the framework for so long that they can't look at it with fresh eyes, and it simply seemed obvious to them. Hard to be blind again after seeing for so long.
