Well, funny story. The backslash was there all along, but my previous implementation of my code syntax highlighter (which I finally overhauled last night from being a custom finite state machine to using regular expressions) ate it. Blah.
Oh well. All sorts of crazy things are going to start working appropriately now, like... not crapping out sometimes on extra whitespace. Yikes.
